How to Identify Hummingbirds: A Beginner's Field Guide
Hummingbirds zip by in a blur, but throat color, range, and tail shape make ID achievable. Learn to tell Ruby-throated, Anna's, Rufous, and more apart.
Hummingbirds are tiny, fast, and frustrating to identify — until you realize that range does most of the work. In huge parts of North America, only one or two species are even possible. Start with geography, then refine.
East of the Plains: assume Ruby-throated
Across the entire eastern half of the U.S. and Canada, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only widespread breeding hummingbird. Males have a brilliant ruby gorget that can look black in poor light; females and young are green above and clean whitish below. If you're east of the Great Plains in summer, that's almost certainly your bird.
West Coast: Anna's and Allen's
- Anna's Hummingbird: the West Coast's year-round bird; males have a rose-pink crown AND throat. Common in gardens, it even sings a scratchy song.
- Allen's / Rufous: glowing orange males. Allen's is a coastal California specialty; Rufous breeds far north and migrates through the West.
Throat color is for males only
The iridescent gorget is the flashiest mark but it only works on adult males, and only when light hits it. Females and immatures of many species look nearly identical and are honestly identified by range, structure, and tail pattern — sometimes left as “Selasphorus sp.” even by experts.
Tips for a better look (and a better photo)
- Set up a feeder with plain 1:4 sugar water (no red dye) and wait — perched birds are far easier to ID than hovering ones.
- Watch for a male to perch and turn his head so the gorget flares.
- Photograph from the side to capture throat, tail, and back color at once.
When in doubt, log the region
Birder AI uses your location to rank hummingbird candidates, which is exactly how experts do it. A green-backed hummingbird in Georgia is Ruby-throated; the same shape in Arizona opens up a much longer list.
Frequently asked questions
What hummingbird is in my yard?+
Start with location. East of the Great Plains, a breeding hummingbird is almost certainly a Ruby-throated. On the West Coast, Anna's is the common year-round species. Use throat color for adult males and your region to narrow females and immatures.
Why do hummingbird throats change color?+
The gorget is iridescent, not pigmented — its color comes from light refracting off feather structure. Depending on the angle, a brilliant ruby throat can appear black, so move or wait for the bird to turn toward the light.
