How to Keep Squirrels Off Bird Feeders: What Actually Works
Squirrels are relentless, but a few proven tactics — baffles, placement, weight-activated feeders, and safflower — will finally outsmart them.
Squirrels are intelligent, athletic, and motivated, which is why most 'squirrel-proof' tricks fail. But a few approaches genuinely work — usually a combination of placement and hardware.
Master the 5-7-9 rule for placement
Squirrels can leap roughly 5 feet up, jump about 7 feet across, and drop down 9 feet onto a feeder. Mount a pole feeder at least 5 feet off the ground and at least 10–12 feet from anything they can jump from — trees, fences, rooftops, deck rails. Placement alone defeats many squirrels.
Add a baffle
A baffle is a dome or cylinder that blocks a squirrel's path. Put a wraparound baffle on the pole below a pole-mounted feeder, or a dome baffle above a hanging feeder. Combined with good placement, baffles are the single most effective fix.
Use weight-activated feeders
Some feeders close the seed ports under a squirrel's weight (or spin them off). Quality weight-activated feeders are pricier but genuinely work, letting light birds feed while shutting out heavy squirrels.
Choose foods squirrels dislike
- Safflower seed is eaten by cardinals, finches, and others but generally snubbed by squirrels.
- Nyjer (thistle) for finches holds little appeal to squirrels.
- Hot-pepper-treated seed/suet deters mammals (which feel the heat) but not birds (which don't); use products designed for this.
Consider a truce
If you can't beat them, a dedicated squirrel feeder with cheap corn placed far from your bird feeders can draw them away. However you handle it, a clean, squirrel-managed station means happier birds and better photos for your Birder AI log.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 5-7-9 rule for squirrel-proofing feeders?+
Squirrels can jump about 5 feet vertically, 7 feet horizontally, and drop 9 feet onto a feeder. Place pole feeders at least 5 feet high and 10–12 feet from any launch point, and add a baffle, to defeat them.
What bird seed do squirrels not like?+
Safflower seed and nyjer (thistle) are generally unappealing to squirrels but eaten by cardinals, finches, and other birds. Hot-pepper-treated seed also deters squirrels (which feel the heat) while birds are unaffected.
