Mourning Dove vs. Eurasian Collared-Dove vs. Rock Pigeon

Three common doves and pigeons share towns and yards across North America. Size, neck mark, tail shape, and voice make them easy to separate.

Doves and pigeons are everywhere, which is exactly why people stop noticing the differences. Three species cover most of North America, and they're genuinely easy to tell apart once you know the marks.

Mourning Dove

Slim and soft tan-brown with black spots on the wing, a small round head, and a long pointed tail edged in white. Its wings whistle on takeoff, and its mournful “coo-OO-oo-oo-oo” is one of the most familiar sounds in America — often mistaken for an owl.

Eurasian Collared-Dove

Larger, paler, and grayer than a Mourning Dove, with a square tail and a distinct black half-collar across the back of the neck. Introduced and now widespread, it gives a three-note “coo-COO-cup” and a harsh nasal flight call.

Rock Pigeon

The classic city pigeon — chunky, variable in color (blue-gray, white, rusty, checkered), with a short tail and, classically, two dark wing bars and an iridescent neck. Endless color morphs come from centuries of domestication.

Quick separation table

  • Long pointed white-edged tail + wing whistle = Mourning Dove.
  • Black neck collar + square tail + pale gray = Eurasian Collared-Dove.
  • Chunky, short tail, highly variable color = Rock Pigeon.

These three are a great early win for new birders. Photograph one on a wire and let Birder AI confirm — then try to call the next one yourself before you check.

Frequently asked questions

Is that owl sound actually a dove?+

Very often, yes. The soft, low “coo-OO-oo-oo-oo” that people mistake for an owl is usually a Mourning Dove, especially when heard in daylight or near houses.

How do I tell a Eurasian Collared-Dove from a Mourning Dove?+

The Eurasian Collared-Dove is larger and paler gray, has a square tail, and shows a black half-collar on the back of the neck. The Mourning Dove is slimmer and browner with a long pointed tail edged in white.
