Sparrow Identification: Making Sense of the Little Brown Birds
Streaky brown sparrows defeat a lot of birders. Use breast pattern, face marks, and habitat to confidently ID Song, Chipping, White-throated, and more.
Sparrows are the original “LBJs” — little brown jobs — and many birders quietly give up on them. Don't. A short checklist of breast pattern, face, and habitat turns most sparrows into satisfying, identifiable birds.
First question: streaked or clean breast?
This single split organizes the whole group. Some sparrows have streaked breasts (Song, Savannah, Lincoln's, Fox); others have clean, unmarked breasts (Chipping, Field, American Tree, White-crowned). Decide this first.
Common streaky-breasted sparrows
- Song Sparrow: heavy streaks converging into a central breast spot; broad gray eyebrow; pumps its tail in flight. The default backyard sparrow.
- Savannah Sparrow: crisp fine streaks, often a yellow spot in front of the eye, short notched tail; loves open grassy fields.
- Lincoln's Sparrow: buffy breast band with fine crisp streaks and a gray face — a 'fancy Song Sparrow' that skulks in wet thickets.
Common clean-breasted sparrows
- Chipping Sparrow: rusty cap, clean gray breast, black line through the eye; common on lawns in summer.
- White-throated Sparrow: crisp white throat, yellow spot before the eye, black-and-white (or tan) striped crown; sings “Oh-sweet-Canada.”
- White-crowned Sparrow: bold black-and-white crown stripes, pink or yellow bill, clean gray face; jaunty and upright.
Habitat and season do the rest
Field edges, marshes, brushy fencerows, and lawns each host different sparrows, and many are seasonal — White-throated and White-crowned are winter birds across much of the U.S. Check your regional eBird bar charts to see who's even possible this month.

Frequently asked questions
How do you identify sparrows?+
Start by deciding whether the breast is streaked or clean, then read the face pattern (eyebrow, crown stripes, eye-ring, throat) and note the habitat and season. Those three filters identify most North American sparrows.
What is the most common backyard sparrow?+
In much of North America it's the Song Sparrow (heavily streaked breast with a central spot) and, in towns, the introduced House Sparrow. Chipping Sparrows are common on lawns in summer.
